Frequently Asked Questions

Will being a part of this program as a mentee increase my chances of getting into UCSD or any other UC schools?

  • TRII is a student-run organization registered at UCSD that has no affiliation with any admissions offices. Therefore, participation in our mentorship program or attending our events will not affect your chances of admittance.

Is this a program to place community college students at UCSD research labs?

  • This is not a program to place community college students at UCSD labs, and we cannot guarantee placement into any research position. The main aim of this program is to provide peer mentorship and guidance to community college students, and our student mentors will do the best they can in finding opportunities and helping mentees navigate various applications.

Is there a time commitment requirement of mentees or mentors?

  • No. We recommend that mentors/mentees meet once per month, but it is completely up to mentors/mentees to decide how often they'd like to meet, based on the mentee's needs. Mentees are also not required to attend our events, but it is highly encouraged.

Is this a program for mentoring on how to navigate UCSD once they have transferred? Or prior to transfer?

  • This program is for current community college students who have not transferred yet. Most of our mentors are from UCSD, UCLA, and UCI, so this program is not specifically for navigating UCSD. However, students who have a strong preference for transferring to a specific college should indicate that in their application; we will try to match them with a mentor from that college, and their mentor will be happy to provide any information on how to navigate that school.

Is this mentorship something that provides academic counseling for all majors by undergraduates or graduate students? Which UCSD faculty mentors have agreed to be a part of the program?

  • Our mentors are undergraduate UC students and therefore do not have the credentials to provide professional academic counseling. They simply hope to assist our mentees on their academic/research journey by passing on any information that they may have. Most of our mentors are transfer students from community colleges, so they can also provide valuable insight on information they wish they had known as community college students.

  • There are no faculty mentors; all mentors are undergraduate UC students. We have Dr. David Artis, the Dean of Undergraduate Research Advancement at UCSD, and David Nguyen, the Founder & Director of CC2PhD Program at UCLA, as our organization advisors. We are currently in the process of recruiting a larger team of faculty advisors to help guide our program.

  • This program places an emphasis on social & behavioral science majors, but we will not reject mentee applications based on major.
